Day 1 In Maui--Father's Day

Up and out the door at 6:15.  We drove through McDonald's to grab breakfast burritos to eat in the car.  We headed to Lahaina to find the kiosk where we had to meet the people for the ATV tour. Found it but we were 30 minutes early.  We decided to drive around.  We went down to Front Street. It had restaurants and  little shops, obviously not open yet, but it looked like it was a nice area.  We parked and walked on the docks where all the tour and fishing boats were.  We found the spot where we will catch the ferry on Tuesday.  Back in the car.
Checking out the boats.

Happy Father's Day Todd and Tom.

We pulled into a spot to park the car.  We jumped out.  I started putting suntan lotion on Cameron and Tom started talking to the tour guy.  Todd then went up with the print out to check in.  We all walked up and Todd said they didn't have a reservation for us.  It was a big to do but in the end we were able to go.  I would have had a fit if we couldn't have.

Waiting patiently.

This is the van we rode in.

This is the ranch we were headed to.

Cameron and a hula girl.

We loaded into a van and rode for 15 minutes to the ranch.  We were read the rules, showed how to work the ATV, got our safety gear, and loaded up.  They were more like a gator than an ATV.  We started driving and quickly realized it was going to be bumpy...and fun...and dirty!

Dressed and ready.

In our vehicles.

Cute picture of us.

Todd took a picture of him and Cameron.

We rode around for awhile and then stopped at the only bathroom on the trip.  While there we walked to a lookout that was kind of cool.  We were given water and fresh pineapple.  We found out within the next 5 years all of the pineapple farms will be out of business.  Even Dole wont be growing pineapples except for their plantation.  They will be grown in Ecuador and somewhere else (can't remember where).   The view of the ocean was so pretty.

Hang loose.

Going for a ride or robbing a bank?

Back on and riding.  Lots of hills and bumps.  One time we were going downhill and it got to be so dusty that I couldn't even see Todd's lights anymore or the road.  I was a little afraid I was going to lose them but I didn't.

2 hours later we were parking our vehicles and getting out.  Oh my goodness were we dirty.  Judy looked like she had some very bad make up on.  Another little girl didn't wear her handkerchief at all so she was filthy.  We tried to wash up as best we could.  That was a great activity.

This is dirt not makeup on Grandma's face.

Back in the vans down to our car.  We decided we would continue driving around Maui back to where we started...at the hotel.  A lot of the time we were driving along the coast.  We all saw something little in the water.  Todd said "what is that?". It looked like a monkey on a surf board but we realized it was a remote control surf board with something on it.  We all thought saying it was a monkey would make a better story. More driving.  We stopped in a couple different spots to get a better look at our surroundings.  We were going up hills with big switch backs.  In places it was not wide enough for two cars to pass.  Once Todd realized that he wasn't so keen on the road.  Too late.  We already committed to driving this route so we had to finish it.  For a little bit I was feeling car sick.  Popped a piece of gum in and then I was ok.

We are so dirty.

That's a long way down.

Pretty.

We ventured down a little ways.

Cute picture of Todd's parents.

Todd and Cameron went down below.

We finally made it back to normal roads after leaving the ATV ride two hours ago. Parts of the drive were pretty and parts were scary.  We all said we were never going that way again.  Back to the hotel.

Some people showered but others went to the pool.  It was a little bit chilly with the wind when we got out but otherwise it was beautiful.  Grandma, Cameron and I hung out in the pool hoping the red dirt would get off of us.  Todd joined us later.  Grandpa came down too but didn't swim.
Grandma needed a little pick me up...

A nice little dip in the pool.

Funky picture.

This guy was in our hotel lobby.

I threw in a load of laundry while we were in the pool.  We hung out in the hot tub a little bit then went back to the room.  We all showered.  Unfortunately, even after swimming and scrubbing, my towel still had red dirt on it.  That stuff does not like to come off.  I said we looked like we put self tanner on.
Cameron and Grandpa Tom relaxing waiting to go to dinner.

Back in the car.  We wanted to try a fish house for dinner.  It was in the area where we had to go for the bike tour on Monday so we decided to find that first.  Found it.  No problem.  We passed a different restaurant on the way so we decided to stop in there to see if we could eat.  There was a worker out front.  He said they wouldn't be opening until 5 because there was a brush fire an hour earlier and they had ash all over in the restaurant that they had to clean up.   Not eating there.

Back to the town and the original dinner plan.  I was driving and we had a Tahoe...big car.  We couldn't find a spot to park the beast.  I pulled down one road to drive around the block but it was a dead end.  Problem was it was a narrow road with no where to turn around.  I started to back out but a truck came in behind me.  I finally got the beast turned around in a driveway.  Me and big cars need some practice.

We finally found a spot to park in a parking lot.  After 3 tries the beast was finally in the spot properly.  We walked to the fish house.  A cute little joint.  Todd ordered all the food and we waited. When they called our number Todd delivered it all.  Maybe he should have gotten a job there or at least a tip from us.  We ate and everyone really enjoyed their dinner.  I was the only one that didn't have seafood. Oh we'll, I was happy with my quesadillas.  We went out to the street. There were a lot of shops.  Todd went and ordered a couple pizzas for breakfast.  We have to get up at 1:00 a.m.  Yikes.  The rest of us went in a few stores.  I found 2 fitted toe rings and bought them.. They cost $62 but I will never have to take them off again.  I finally took off my toe rings our friend Brenna gave me from the Happy Joes gum ball machine a year ago.   I was pretty excited about my purchase.
Ordering our food.

Doesn't the food look good?  It was.

Back in the car and back to the hotel.  We hung out for awhile but Grandma and Grandpa went to bed around 6:00, Todd was in bed by 6:45(though he was sleeping on the couch before that), and Cameron and I were in bed by 7:30.  Very early get up time tomorrow.

And then one of himself.
